Avoiding Messy Coils
Is it really necessary to clean your coils? A dirty coil can put your equipment and inventory at risk and result in a major repair bill. When it comes to refrigeration, a dirty coil can be a major burden and require an emergency service call. Put simply, a regularly scheduled coil cleaning will help keep your equipment running better and longer. Keeping the evaporator and condenser coils of your refrigeration system clean and free of foreign materials can do more to maintain operating efficiency and increase equipment life than any other preventive maintenance procedure.
What options do you have in terms of cleaning your refrigeration coils?
The inclination of some technicians is merely to brush the surface of the coil structure while simultaneously vacuuming off the dislodged dust/debris. This is not sufficient for getting the clogs that occur within the coil body of a typical unit. Special coil brushes are available that can be used to snake into the channels of the coil structure to get out the embedded debris, but this greatly lengthens the cleaning process. Having experience in cleaning clogged coils will most often resort in using a blast of compressed air to remove the dust and debris. In order to catch the blown off material, most will use a wet fabric or large plastic garbage bag as a catch mechanism. In our opinion, neither of these methods are best to ensure trapping the debris.
Careful consideration should always be used when choosing a cleaning method: Where are the coils located? What equipment is close by? What material is being removed from the coils’ surface?
